2012: Another Busy Year at the Chesapeake Arboretum
Congratulations and many thanks to the officers of the volunteer Board of Directors at the Chesapeake Arboretum:
President = Jeff Cavanaugh
Vice President = Linwood Nelms
Secretary = Michelli Booker
Treasurer = Carin Schneller-Carr
Assistant Treasurer = Andy Merchant

We were at the Virginia Flower & Garden Expo on January 20 – 22.
Our booth had friendly, smiling faces to greet the hundreds of Expo attendees. Our board members and fabulous volunteers – including our own Mother Nature – was on hand to help spread the word about what we love about the Chesapeake Arboretum.
Thanks to all who stopped by our booth, took trail maps and brochures with them and spend time this year getting to know and enjoy the property and very user-friendly trails..

Our January Kids’ Day was on January 21st! The topic was “Walking in the Winter Wonder Woods” Our new educational programming in collaboration with the Virginia Museum of Natural History (VMNH) is SO exciting!
This photo of instructor Susan Walton is from the November 2011 program “Squirrels, Trees and Other Nutty Things”.

The March program was on March 17th. The topic was “Pollinators: Not just Blowing in the Wind.”
May’s program was on May 10th. The topic was “Flying Wild with the Birds.”
After the VMNH’s Kids’ Days Summer Nature Science Camps, in June, July and August, the VMNH Kids’ Day program begins again for the 2012-2013 academic year. Programs will be held on Saturdays in September (15), November (17), January (19), March (16) and May (18).
For registration details click here.
2012 has also seen a new collaborative partnership with Abrakadoodle Art Studios.
Abrakadoodle will be conducting Summer Art Camps in June, July and August and then will be conducting ‘Mommy and Me’ art classes for Moms and their pre-schoolers in September and October. There will also be several opportunities for little ones to attend “Mini-Doodler” sessions in November. Elementary aged participants will have an opportunity to attend an Abrakadoodle Holiday workshop in December.

Arbor Day 2012 took place on the Homestead property. There was great excitement as Skip Raymo of “Hedgehog’s Woodworks” turned a piece of timber which was part of the huge trunk of what had been a massive chestnut oak overlooking Bridge A (rebuilt in Fall 2011) into an incredible commemorative set of river otters playfully welcoming all visitors to the Arboretum.
The sculpture was commissioned by the Arboretum and donated by Ed and Linda Bradley, long-time (very dedicated and hard-working) volunteers in memory of Linda’s mother Polly Hoag, who had passed away last summer.

from the Clipper article, dated 04-03-12
” Before the trunk turned into otters, the project had to be financed. “The Bradleys (Linda and her husband, Ed) raised their hands and said they wanted to honor Polly, and provided the funds,” [Sheila} Clendenning said. Hoag, a wildlife enthusiast, worked with the U.S. Forest Service headquarters in Washington, D.C. She helped promote Smokey Bear.
“Any kid’s letter written to Smokey 30 or so years ago was probably handled by Polly,” Clendenning said. “About 20 years ago she finally moved to Chesapeake to be near her daughter and her family. It’s a fitting and loving tribute in her memory.” ”
Come and see them for yourself!

By April, our Stewartia Grove had gained a new bypassing trail, thanks to efforts by our only part time staffer, Bob Fountain and volunteers Ed Bradley and Mik Lestyan. This gained great vantage points for our State Champion Stewartia during several public tours in April and May.
The Arboretum’s Native Woodland Garden Trail – dedicated in memory of the late Jean-Marie Eagler after her passing in January 2011 – has gained an enthusiastic group of Tidewater Master Naturalists as it’s guardians and keepers. This is one of several ongoing woodland projects being phased in in various areas of our Urban Forest trails to better help homeowners and residents eventually see for themselves an arboretum landscaped for our own environment as others around the country have and adding continuously to more aspects of “Nature’s Classroom.”

Also coming up this summer is another “Day at the Arboretum” series of classes and workshops for adults. We’ll have one of our area’s best-known rose expert and past president of Tidewater Rose Society, Howard Jones speaking along with area Naturalist Vickie Shufer giving us a Walk, Talk and Taste presentation out on the trails and at the Homestead, based on our plentiful paw paws and other good wild plants for wildly good eating.
September 1st has another public tour scheduled, this time through our Paw paw patch with Kristina Bezanson leading the way.

October has another Yoga for Life session planned to benefit both the Arboretum and the Sidney Omar cancer center as well as the 4th annual AutumnFest – our Harvest Time Community Festival with many Children’s Activities, many earth-friendly or ‘green’ vendors, our 2nd Annual “Chesapeake’s Finest” First Responders Corn Hole Contest and a ‘Barn Raising’ Dinner and Square Dance in the evening.
All told; the Arboretum’s really hopping in 2012. It’s a good thing the woods are relatively quiet!
